Photo Essay: The Cherry Blossoms of Gyeongju

The Return of Spring
Now Time throws off his cloak again
of ermined frost, and wind, and rain,
and clothes him in the embroidery
of glittering sun and clear blue sky.

with beast and bird the forest rings,
each in his jargon cries or sings;
and Time throws off his cloak again,
of ermined frost, and wind, and rain.

river, and fount, and tinkling brook
wear in their dainty livery
drops of silver jewelry;
in new made suit they merry look;
and Time throws off his cloak again
of ermined frost, and wind, and rain.

Longfellow

“In the Spring the livelier iris changes on the burnish’d dove; in the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.”

Tennyson

“A self is not something static, tied up in a pretty parcel and handed to the child, finished and complete. A self is always becoming.”

Madeleine L’Engle

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”

Keats

“What a strange thing! to be alive beneath cherry blossoms.”

Kobayashi Issa

“I sit beside the fire and think
Of all that I have seen
Of meadow flowers and butterflies
In summers that have been…

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
In autumns that there were
With morning mist and  silver sun
And mist upon my hair…

I sit beside the fire and think
Of how the world will be
When winter comes without a spring
That I shall ever see…
For still there are so many things
That I have never seen
In every wood in every spring
There is a different green…

I sit beside the fire and think
Of people long ago
And people that will see a world
That I shall never know…

But all the while I sit and think
Of times there were before
I listen for returning feet
And voices at the door.”

Tolkien

“That is one good thing about this world… there are always sure to be more springs.”

  1. What a beautiful post! The photos combined with the excellent photography inspire me to look up poems, in books, mind you, and memorize them. Especially the Keats, which is the one that is in Sweet Land, I believe.
    Love and HUGS,
    Your O.M.

  2. Yes, they do quote Keats in Sweet Land. Love that movie! Have you ever seen the movie Bright Star? I think you would enjoy it if you liked Sweet Land, and or like Keats.

I would love to hear your thoughts!
