Diary of a 5th Grader: Lizard and Zombie Brain Sherbet Combo

 Merriam-Webster Definition
imagination: the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality.

My Definition
imagination: when students combine the words “lizard,” “zombie,” “brain,” “rainbow,” “sherbet,” and “combo,” in the same sentence.

Another exhibition of my students’ writing abilities. I have to say, I was quite impressed by the creativity.

Iris, a very capable student, is clearly obsessed with the boy band B1A4 (as are many a-female student).  I think this is her second diary entry featuring B1A4. You have to love the influence of Kpop!

One of my adorable students, Chloe, came up with this idea.

hmm……delicious!

One of my higher level students, Kristen, thought to include the mode of delivery in her diary entry.

I would not mind one bit if this ice cream really existed. Actually, pretty sure if I was to invent my own world this flavor would be at the top of the list of things to bring into existence.

You just cannot get any better than “raining chocolate”!

This student, Gina, is always quite logical. What a good idea, especially for English class.

I feel like some native English speakers could benefit from such a flavor.

        Ahhhh, so sweet!

Oh Tony, I love this kid. He always has a smile and a wave for me every single day. He might be a man of few words, but the idea is stellar.

Hmmm………this student is not lacking in creativity.

A little creepy if you ask me.

And last but not least is the contribution by one of my favorite students, William. When I ask for an assignment, this kid actually tells me that he (not his dog) ate his homework. I suppose his ice cream flavor should not have surprised me.

It’s good to know that even in an age of excessive TV and video games, some kids still have imaginations.

  1. omg your students, their enthusiasm, and obvious love for you, and your relationship with are just adorable. so are you! what a joy to read about cat toilet seats, your medical emergencies, and life (sometimes lonely when you're far from home) in korea. so glad we've met. can't wait to see what other definitions you come up with dear! gabi

  2. Thanks! It just so happens that I love them all back, even the ones that make me want to pull my hair out sometimes. As a mom, I am sure you understand that feeling 🙂

I have fun with my definitions, languages are a passion of mine and I love the intricacies and subjectivity of linguistics.

I find that a large amount of the time, it's my students that are teaching me 🙂
